When I stepped into the role of Vice President of Marketing and Communications at Mystic Seaport Museum, one of the first challenges I needed to solve was deceptively simple: how does a marketing department of three support dozens of internal stakeholders, each with legitimate, time-sensitive needs?


Having come from an agency setting, I ran the Museum’s marketing team much like an internal agency, supporting membership, advancement, public programs, research, and institutional initiatives, often simultaneously.   • Roles and ownership across the team


Only after roles, processes, and expectations were clearly defined did we build the system itself.


This sequence mattered. Technology did not create clarity. The clarity made the technology effective.
